ArtVaults Season Four features 11 of Southampton’s hidden medieval vaults and structures. Dating as far back as the 12th century, the vaults are central to the enjoyment of ArtVaults, revealing the city’s rich history and presenting a contrasting backdrop to the contemporary art installations.

Many of the locations were constructed for merchants, reflecting the city’s longstanding importance as a port and trade centre. Others formed part of the city’s fortified defences, while in more recent times some vaults provided shelter during WW II air raids.
