Outside King John's Palace

King John's Palace

One of the best-preserved Norman houses in England, this was probably built between 1150 and 1200, with later alterations. Wine was stored on the ground floor and the merchant and his family lived above. After the French attacked Southampton in 1338 the house became part of the town wall. The doors and windows were blocked and gun ports were constructed on the ground floor.
