In the Middle Ages, the Old Town was one of the busiest five ports in the country. While few timber-framed buildings have survived, Southampton enjoys a rich heritage of town walls, medieval vaults and undercrofts, today providing a unique and historic setting for ArtVaults.

Southampton’s Old Town is the historic core of the city, linking the commercially and historically important waterfront with the renowned Central Parks and main retail core of the city. This Character Area is clearly delineated on three sides by the longest surviving stretch of remaining medieval town walls in the country. The Old Town area includes over 90 listed buildings and 45 ancient monuments.
