The 800-year-old monument stands at the heart of Southampton’s city centre. The Bargate was originally built as the main gateway to the medieval city and has held a number of important positions throughout its history. These include being the city’s guildhall (until the 1770s) and the police headquarters during WW2.
Southampton’s most historic monument re-opened to the public in 2006. Funded by the South East England Development Agency and with the support of Southampton City Council, the Bargate was refurbished and given a new lease of life as the Bargate Monument Gallery.

bargate exhibition - ArtVaults in Context
As well as the history of Southampton’s medieval vaults, the exhibition explores the concept of ArtVaults and charts the project’s development from its roots, begun in 2004 by a group of enthusiastic artists, to the major cultural event it is today.
